Gondar Medical Clinic: Prep for Day One

Sign for the eye and dental clinics in Gondar, EthiopiaBy Jonathan Gannon,
Jewish Voice Director of Global Outreach

Our entire team departed for Gondar, Ethiopia, on Thursday morning, September 29, 2011, for the first round of work at our free medical clinic to the poor Jewish communities there.

Benjamin and Jeremy have been working tirelessly on the clinic operations, hiring of the clinic workers, and ensuring that all supplies were shipped in a timely fashion.

Our Africa directors, Mezmur and Dr. Adane, found our new clinic site for us to use. They have been working very hard over the past few months to ensure all our customs documents were in order, our arriving doctors had Ethiopian medical licenses, and all the group logistics were ready for our arrival.

Dr. Holley and Benjamin have been spearheading the clinic operations and setup. The systems they have developed and organized are beyond impressive.

Jeremy is managing all the local workers, which is no simple task. We have hired around 110 local workers and medical professionals. Jeremy is responsible to ensure they are trained, properly documented in their pay amounts, and at their appropriate posts.

New kids on the block, Nathan  and Israel, are both already hard at work like seasoned veterans.

Jonathan Bernis arrived safely into Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Saturday night, October 1. The entire team was so very excited to see him, and they look forward to his leadership and teaching throughout the week.

All tents are up, clinician rooms are prepared, the orientations have taken place, and the team is ready!

By the time you read this we will likely be at the end of our first day of operations.

Ronna  is anointed and ready to lead our prayer team, which will no doubt witness the harvest of great fruit.

Today we anticipate treating between 900-1,200 patients. It’s going to be an amazing first day!
