All Believers Should Celebrate Biblical Feasts

Mary asks in an email during the July 22, 2010 live Jewish Voice webcast, “Is it true that the Festivals were given to all people and not just the Israelites. My Christian friends don’t believe me that they were and they say that it was only for the Israelites?” Messianic Rabbis Jack Zimmerman, Crystal Lutton, and Eric Raider weigh in.

JACK: If you are a Christian, that means you are a follower of Yeshua (Jesus). It means you do what Yeshua did. You might want to tell your Christian friends that if they want to follow Yeshua, they need to know that the festivals are these beautiful signposts that they are to follow too because Yeshua followed them. John 7 is an excellent example of the Feast of Booths, or Sukkot. You have a better understanding of Yeshua when you look at what He celebrated, and the feasts and festivals are relevant to all.

CRYSTAL LUTTON: The feasts and festivals teach us about His comings, His first and second coming. There is a lot of prophetic picture in them that we can see Yeshua fulfilling. I have five children and I homeschool. When I am teaching my children, there is a difference between me telling them something and them getting to experience something. One of the things that is so amazing to me about all of the feasts and festivals is that they are a kinesthetic experience. You essentially become part of celebration, whether you are waving the lulav or whether you are passing the matzah, you are experiencing the picture that God gave us to teach us about Messiah. You start to experience and see things from a whole different perspective than just reading about it in a book or having someone explain it to you.

ERIC RAIDER: A lot of what has come about today with this separation between what Christians should do and what Jews should do comes from that culture of anti-Semitism – worshipping on Sunday instead of Saturday. The start of Easter is a great example. A lot of these festivals and feasts where pushed away from the Christians because it was thought that those were for the Jews and not for Christians.
