The Missing Link in Isaiah 6:1

By Jack Zimmerman,
Staff Evangelist at Jewish Voice

The obvious part of Isaiah 6:1 is where we try to picture God seated on this throne and picture what He looks like. Maybe God is a combination of a Ruler sitting on this glorified throne and Father Time.

As we read through this passage, we miss the most important part of Isaiah 6:1. It’s the part that nobody pays attention to, the first seven words: “In the year that King Uzziah died.”

We don’t pay attention to this, because we don’t think it’s important. We could care less about King Uzziah, and, frankly, by the time we read the Bible, everybody in the Bible is dead anyway. It’s not a revelation to us that King Uzziah died, but it’s important because when God writes something in Scripture, no matter how inconsequential we think it is, it is important to the Lord.

The reason that he wrote this in Scripture is because there was something very important that happened the year King Uzziah died. King Uzziah was a great king. He took the reign of king at age 16, and his reign ended at 68. You don’t hang onto a king for 52 years if he’s not doing a good job. But in the year he died, a new king was coming on the throne, a king by the name of Ahaz, and Ahaz was not a good king. Ahaz took everything this King Uzziah did and turned it on its head – Ahaz desecrated the temple and sacrificed his own two sons to fire.

Why does Isaiah 6 start off by saying here is what happened the year King Uzziah died? Because the next words he says are, “I saw the Lord.”

In the year King Uzziah died, Isaiah knew a bad guy was coming and knew that times were going to get tough, but he didn’t look at King Ahaz, who was to come. His eyes were focused on the Lord.
